Well most of the users feel XP to be slow when installed on old PC’s or PC’s with less RAM. Well there are several tricks to increase the bootup and shutdown speed of Windows XP. I have applied many in my system and it does work. So I will list all the tricks I know here for users to speed their Windows XP.
- If you are on a Network or have Internet do prefer assigning manual IP to the network card. This will speed up the bootup time.
- Disabling Recent Documents too speeds up XP a bit. To do this start Registry Editor by “Start>Run>regedit” then Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. Then create a new DWORD value “NoRecentDocsHistory” and then set its value to 1. Restart the PC for changes to take Effect. - For PC’s with very low RAM disabling the boot logo is a great option. You may do so by “Start>Run>MSCONFIG.EXE” then under the BOOT.INI tab, click the NOGUIBOOT check box option. Thats it now restart the PC.
- Increase your Virtual Memory to get more speed in Windows XP. Read this post to know how to increase your Virtual Memory.
- Go to My Computer Properties (explained steps earlier). Under the Remote Tab clear the Remote Assistance & Remote Desktop check boxes. Do not clear them if you use any one of them.
- Locate the “boot.ini” in your C:\ drive. Open the file with notepad, change the Timeout value to 10, Save the file n close it.
- Open regedit (explained earlier) navigate to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop” and set the WaitToKillAppTimeout to 1000 as well as HungAppTimeout to 1000.
- Open regedit (explained earlier) navigate to “HKEY_USERS\DEFAULT\Control Panel\Desktop” and set the WaitToKillAppTimeout to 1000 as well as HungAppTimeout to 1000.
- Open regedit (explained earlier) navigate to “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control” and set the WaitToKillServiceTimeout to 1000.
- Open regedit (explained earlier) navigate to “HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop.” and set the AutoEndTasks value to 1.
Will be updating this thread daily as I find new tricks for XP. Happy Reading!!
